Bridging the network generation gap

Companies across industries have started to deploy 5G networks. Mobile operators need to step up their game to meet needs that arise hand in hand with this transformation. The first course of action required is strengthening capabilities that support the seamless and simultaneous operations in 2G/3G/4G networks.

5G will surely be the future network of choice, yet most network operators need to continue the operation of legacy 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. Competitiveness arises from the ability to bridge the network generation gap. This calls for capabilities to reuse capacity and provide interworking while traffic gradually moves towards modern networks.

What all will change with 5G signaling?

The transformation from mainly user-based subscriptions towards the worlds of billions of connected devices requires rethinking in four key areas:

  • How does 5G core architecture support applications and services?
  • What capabilities are required to implement virtualization?
  • Network slicing thinking should be incorporated into service design and planning
  • The focus on security must be tightened: 5G Core and HTTP2 will increase security threats due to the larger number of devices

We at Tieto have been pioneers in telecom network signaling for over 20 years. We understand the evolution path and can help you navigate 5G transformation.

With many of our customers, we have estimated that the cloud-based signaling controller product that supports all telecom networks and transformation can result in up to 30% cost-savings, in comparison to setting up the signaling solution network by network.

Core functionalities of Tieto Evolved Signaling Controller

The Tieto Evolved Signaling Controller product supports the 5G core network by providing functions like Network Repository Function (NRF) combined with Binding Support Function (BSF), Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP), HTTP2 Router/Proxy and 4G interworking function. It has the core routing functionality of Signaling Transfer Point (STP) and Diameter Routing Agent (DRA). It also includes a multitude of optional features like Number Portability, Equipment Identity Register, 3G/4G Interworking, Diameter Edge Agent (DEA) and Signaling Firewall.
