European Utility Week 2018 highlights the need for innovation in the face of ageing ways of working

Mikael Normelli

Head of Sales, Energy Utilities, Tieto

Tieto’s participation in the European Utility Week this year was exciting as always. The event was a possibility for networking and to share interesting insights about the current market situation and where the industry is heading.

This year, almost 12,000 visitors and 2,000 utilities from more than 100 countries participated. If you want to become a forerunner within the industry and move from a traditional utility to an energy service provider offering smart home services this is an opportunity for all to be inspired as part of that journey.

The event housed over 650 international exhibitors developing and deploying solutions including digital technologies, distributed energy, AI, IoT connectivity, smart grids, cyber security, energy trading, smart buildings and much more.

Future-proof your business through digitalisation

The main theme for this year was how to be future-proof, innovative and bringing in new talent to the market, but also how the combination of digitalisation and decentralisation could transform the European energy sector where traditional ways of working are rapidly changing.

There were many interesting discussions related to interest from new actors entering the market and new possible business models that support business renewal and increased consumer demand for high-quality services.

I would like to thank everyone who visited Tieto’s stand for fruitful and interesting discussions about how we can support them in their ongoing journey to reach operational efficiency and become future-proof. Especially within our Distributed Energy solution portfolio - one of the most interesting areas for being a forerunner. Our capabilities to be supportive in the ongoing Smart Meter rollout and Smart Meter operation was also highly appreciated and I’m looking forward to deeper discussions within this area with those of you who have shown an interest in partnering with Tieto.

Results of extensive energy market survey published

This year during the EUW, we took the opportunity to publish the results of our Energy Survey we conducted this spring among 80 energy retail and distribution company decision-makers in the Nordics.

Retail foresees drastic changes in its role and offering. In the distribution business, regulation puts pressure on operational efficiency. Distributors see digitalisation, automation and new technology as their primary means of increasing efficiency and saving on costs. Both retail and distribution companies show poor preparedness for the consolidation of players in the coming years.

The survey really shows the need for business renewal and that internal efficiencies guide strategy, while uncertainty about data hub adaptation and business survival prevail in the market.

We are grateful for receiving high-quality responses from experienced decision-makers in the industry. This is an opportunity to reconcile strategic opinions, challenges and focus areas in the energy market.

While the survey was conducted in the Nordics, it is indicative of the market trends in the rest of Europe in the very near future. Download a summary of the report at
