Why applying for the GenT trainee program was the right choice for me

Isabella Seege

Head of Employer Branding, Sweden, Tieto

My journey at Tieto began around two years ago in Helsinki when I joined the Generation T (GenT) trainee program. During my trainee year, I was given the chance to gain invaluable industry and IT knowledge while expanding my network throughout the organization. This proved to be extremely important since, even though I didn’t realize it at the time, I would end up spending the following two years abroad in Sweden as an expatriate.

The GenT program allowed me to work across the organization with different people from diverse backgrounds. At the same time, I gained an understanding of the different markets we operate in and the customers we work with, which again has paid off when relocating to Sweden.

A chance to work abroad

After my year as a GenT trainee I was offered the opportunity to move to Stockholm for a long-term assignment. This meant at least two years in a new country and city, with new challenges, new colleagues, customers and a different culture. My first thought was: how different can it really be? I speak fluent Swedish and have experience in working across the Nordics. But somehow it was still rather different, both when it comes to everyday life and work. So, why not enjoy it and learn from it?

What I’ve learned is that you shouldn’t get stuck in the past. Focus on the future and how you can make the most of it; reflect upon what you can bring to the table. What can you learn from others? Remember to take advantage of the differences that exist between working cultures, diverse backgrounds, markets, etc. Simply remember to exchange knowledge and information and it will pay off.

Grow your career

At Tieto I’ve always felt that people listen to new ideas and are open to new ways of working. We can all learn from each other. This is one of the greatest assets Tieto has. People are not only skillful but also open-minded and helpful. This has made it so much easier to get onboard, whether as a trainee/newcomer or as an expatriate in a new country. Remember to embrace change and move forward. In my role I’ve had the chance to work with various tasks, projects, teams and customers; everything from offering development and new business models to sales and partnership management. I get to learn from the best people in the industry. None of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for the open source culture that’s at the heart of everything Tieto does. In addition, Tieto offers great opportunities through initiatives such as leadership trainings. Thanks to chances like these I’ve been able to grow my career in the desired direction.

Great support and awesome networks

Moving to a new country is not always easy, but Tieto were with me every step of the way. I was provided with great support that made the integration into life in Sweden as smooth as possible. Though finding one’s place in a new society and working environment can be tricky, you get to challenge your way of thinking by connecting with people you otherwise wouldn’t have. Work-life balance is important; it takes time and requires patience. Luckily the networks at Tieto are great - this makes it easy to meet new people.
