The year of the rooster will be a wake-up call for cybersecurity
According to Chinese zodiac, we have just entered the year of the rooster. Some of the astrologists tell us that following 12 months are going to be filled with surprises and have lots of action.
The things that are characteristic for rooster years will also ring very true to cybersecurity in near future. Traditional threats are taking new forms and new ones will arise, fuelled by the proliferation of the Internet of Things.
So, what’s in the stars for security?
Ransomware was one of the biggest concerns last year (2016 for Westerners, year of the monkey for sinophiles), and it will continue to top the threat lists. It was featured as one of the top 5 concerns of Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority’s annual report.
But even ransomware isn’t what it used to be. For example, the recent Popcorn Time malware used a very slimy method of extortion. If you didn’t feel like paying, you could also get your files back by spreading the malware to your friends.
A similar method was used by Koolova. But instead of asking for money or betrayal, it required you to read two security related articles to get your information back. Speak about learning by mistake!
Just like everything else, also ransomware is moving to the cloud. Ransomware as a service, RaaS, will bring easy means of extortion to an even wider audience of aspiring bad guys.
Visibility, simplicity, protection
What is the best way to protect your company in the year of the rooster and also in the following years, then? When we founded Tieto Security Services a year ago, we based our offering on three principles: visibility, simplicity, and protection.
In this year’s blog posts we will take a very close look at these principles. We’ll give you practical information on how they will help you protect your critical assets and keep them from harm’s way.
This is the year you should wake up early to the rooster’s call and make sure that your company stays secure, even when it faces new and unexpected threats.
